Tattoo Removal Aftercare: Essential Tips for Optimal Healing

Proper aftercare is crucial for successful tattoo removal. Learn the essential steps to ensure optimal healing and results.

Good aftercare is just as important as the laser treatment itself. How you care for your skin between sessions directly affects how quickly you heal and how well the tattoo fades. Follow these proven steps for the best results.

The first 24 to 48 hours

Immediately after treatment, your provider will usually apply a dressing. Keep it on as directed, and expect some redness, swelling, and warmth around the area. Applying a cool compress can help with discomfort and inflammation.

Daily care during healing

  • Gently wash the area with mild soap and lukewarm water
  • Pat dry — never rub — with a clean towel
  • Apply a thin layer of the ointment your provider recommends
  • Keep the area covered with a clean bandage for the first few days
  • Stay hydrated to support your body's natural clearing process

What to avoid

Certain activities can slow healing or increase the risk of scarring. While your skin recovers, steer clear of the following:

  • Do not pick, scratch, or pop blisters and scabs
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds
  • Skip swimming pools, hot tubs, and baths that soak the area
  • Hold off on intense exercise that causes heavy sweating for a day or two
  • Avoid tight clothing that rubs against the treated skin

Protect against the sun

Sun protection is one of the most important parts of aftercare. Once the area has healed, apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher whenever it is exposed. Sun exposure on treated skin can cause discoloration and make future sessions less effective.

When to call your provider

Some redness, swelling, and blistering is normal. But contact your provider if you notice signs of infection such as increasing pain, pus, spreading redness, or fever. A quick check-in is always worth it to keep your healing on track.
